Handling Long-Running Tasks in Automation Anywhere

There are many times when it may be helpful for a bot to stop until a prerequisite condition is met and then restarted at the point where the bot exited. Examples where this may useful include waiting for an overnight job to run successfully, executing a remote task to run on another system closer to the data or processes more quickly, or optimizing time and efficiency in attended mode operations. Effective bot design can significantly improve your bot utilization. Polling and wait operations will limit the availability of the Automation Anywhere Bot Runner to execute other bots that are queued to run. Creating a Solution Design Document for What's to ComeAutomation Pathfinder Program

Note: The word “Bot” is used in this article to describe the process in its automated form. The word “task bot” is used to identify component parts which make up the Bot. If a Process Definition Document (PDD) is the “as-is” capture of the process, then a Solution Design Document (SDD) is the “to-be”. That is, a diagrammatic representation of what the process will look like once it’s automated. When the process has been approved for automation and the PDD has been signed off by the process owner & technical team, then creating the SDD is the next step in the cycle. The SDD should be a bridge between the PDD and the automation which will be built. It should serve as a technical guide for the developer, outlining key process steps and how they will be automated, the applications involved, and even how exceptions should be handled. Triggering Bots Using the Control Room API

In this episode, we dive into creating a basic bot which can be triggered and receive values from the Automation Anywhere Enterprise A2019 Control Room. The video leverages the Enterprise A2019 Postman collection. If you don't have Postman yet, check out http://getpostman.com/ - its a great tool for testing API calls to understand how they work and what their responses look like. Video Recap: Get a Token Before any bots can be triggered or ID's can be pulled back, a token must be generated using the Control Room authentication API. The video uses authentication via username/password, but API key authentication could have been used as an alternative - and would have returned an identical response body.
