One assumption I'm rethinking is that automation is mainly about replacing repetitive tasks. After this week, I see that agentic process automation is more about designing intelligent workflows where AI agents can reason, make context-aware decisions, and collaborate with humans when needed. The Agentic Design Framework also showed me that understanding the business problem, stakeholders, and desired outcomes is more important than jumping straight into building bots. A well-designed solution starts with analyzing the process, not with the automation tool itself.

One assumption I’m rethinking after this week is that automation success comes from building as many bots as possible. I used to believe scaling meant multiplying task automations, but through the Agentic Design Framework I’ve realized true scale comes from designing with a process-first mindset—starting with business goals, mapping information flows, and then layering in automation where it adds the most value. This shift helps me see automation not as isolated tasks, but as reusable, governed solutions that reduce long-term investment and unlock exponential ROI.

I used to think that anything requiring human judgment, role-based workflows, or approval processes had to be handled by technologies like BPM rather than traditional automation. After exploring the Automation Anywhere landscape, I now see that these types of initiatives can be included in the backlog of value propositions for different clients.  

One thing that helps significantly is approaching process deconstruction from an agentic perspective. It prevents us from focusing on an exact replication of existing activities and instead reveals opportunities for optimization before implementation or development begins.

One assumption I'm rethinking: I used to believe process discovery had to stay anchored in traditional process mapping, documenting the "as-is" flow step by step before touching any design work. This week challenged that.

The shift for me is realizing discovery and design isn't just about capturing a process, it's about reframing it. Instead of asking "what are the steps?", the Agentic Design Framework pushes you to ask "what's the actual problem, and what tools/capabilities would an agent need to solve it holistically?" That's a completely different starting point, you're not mapping a swimlane, you're deconstructing intent and outcomes first.

It's a bit of a mindset flip: moving from "document the process so I can automate it" to "understand the problem well enough to build the right tool for it, even if that means the process itself looks different once agentic capabilities are involved."

I'm still working through what this means for how we scale it across a full discovery engagement, how much traditional mapping we still need for stakeholder alignment/documentation purposes vs. how much we replace with this more problem-first, capability-first lens. Curious to see how the next few weeks tie this together into a repeatable discovery/design methodology.

One assumption I'm rethinking after this week is that every agentic automation solution must be built end-to-end for each use case. I've realized that a well-designed framework with reusable modules, combined with the right tools and access for agents, can dramatically reduce implementation effort while improving scalability and ROI. This shift in thinking has also helped me see how many existing RPA solutions can be reimagined as Agentic Process Automation (APA) solutions, enabling greater adaptability and business value.

One thing that hasn't changed for me is my belief in the value of automation. What has changed is my perspective on how to implement it.

When I worked on traditional automation use cases, the goal was to build Task Bots that could successfully automate a business process and generate measurable value. What I'm seeing now is an evolution rather than a replacement. Those same Task Bots can become reusable tools within an Agentic Process Automation (APA) framework.

The additional value comes from combining those tools with the right AI model, context and memory, AI agents, and Automation Anywhere's orchestration and execution loop. The Task Bots we built for deterministic, rule-based processes remain valuable, but they can now be leveraged as part of larger agentic workflows that also handle non-routine tasks, reason over structured and unstructured data, and make context-aware decisions.

To me, APA isn't replacing traditional automation—it's extending it by orchestrating intelligent agents and existing automations into a more adaptive, outcome-driven solution.

It's a mindset shift from "document the process so I can automate it" to "understand the problem well enough to design the right solution—even if the process itself changes once agentic capabilities are introduced."

At the same time, one principle stands out to me: without proper guardrails, governance, security, and human oversight, Agentic Process Automation cannot deliver sustainable business value. The power of APA comes not just from autonomous agents, but from ensuring they operate within well-defined boundaries that provide reliability, compliance, transparency, and trust.

The biggest mindset shift for me was realizing that the first deliverable of an automation project shouldn't be a bot - it should be clarity.

 

The Agentic Design Framework was a reality check: less "Let's automate this task," and more "Let's interrogate this process like a detective before we touch a single tool." I used to treat process deconstruction as a formality standing between me and the fun part - building. Now I understand that skipping it just gives you a beautifully engineered bot that automates a broken process really efficiently.

 

My favorite takeaway? It's almost poetic that this Pathfinder Training Camp is teaching us humans to slow down and think before building, while APA teaches AI agents to think before acting. I guess good design is good design, whether it's a course, a platform, or an AI agent. Week 1's real lesson: even an "AI Automation Engineer" needs a little agentic discipline before touching the keyboard.


Assumption: I used to think that giving AI agents real autonomy meant opening up a total "black box" where compliance, predictability, and security go out the window.

Rethought View: What really clicked for me going through the material is that Agentic Process Automation on the Automation Anywhere platform isn't about letting AI run wild. It's actually about built-in enterprise governance. By embedding guardrails, role-based controls, and audit logs straight into the Agentic Design Framework, we get the best of both worlds: agents that can make smart decisions on their own, but strictly within the safety boundaries we set. It showed me that speed and autonomy don't have to come at the expense of control.

I used to think automation was like putting a process on fast-forward.  After Week 1, I see it more like a GPS that helps find a better route altogether. The Agentic Design Framework showed me that the best solutions come from understanding the destination first, not just speeding up the journey. Great automation starts with asking better questions, not building faster bots.

One assumption I'm rethinking is that automation starts with the tool. In practice, we often pick the platform first and then try to fit the problem into it.

After this week, I realized that the right starting point is to break down the business problem: what decisions need to be made, what data feeds those decisions, and where an agent really adds value versus where a simple workflow is enough.

I work on projects that combine LLMs and automation, and this mindset shift makes all the difference — the quality of an agent isn't in what the technology can do, but in how well the problem was understood before building anything.

I was thinking Intelligent automation was same as APA. Just after going through the foundations of APA only, I realized the difference.

The assumption I'm rethinking is that "automation" simply means replicating a manual process step by step, just faster. After diving into the Agentic Design Framework this week, it became clear that the real value of APA (Agentic Process Automation) isn't in automating the sequence of clicks a human would make. It's in deconstructing the business problem first, understanding the decisions embedded in the process, and only then deciding where an agent can reason and adapt, instead of just executing a rigid script.

That completely changes the design phase: before opening the Bot Editor, the question isn't "how do I automate this?" but "what decisions does this process require, and which of those can be delegated to an agent with enough context to exercise judgment, rather than follow fixed rules?" It's a shift from traditional RPA (deterministic rules) to designing for agents that handle exceptions and ambiguity, which changes how I even structure requirements gathering with clients before writing a single line of bot logic.

One assumption about automation that I've been rethinking is the belief that automation is primarily about completing individual tasks. This week reinforced that while agents and automations are highly effective at handling specific activities and workflows, the real transformation comes from Agentic Process Automation (APA). APA goes beyond task execution by orchestrating multiple agents, systems, and processes to deliver complete business outcomes end-to-end. Instead of simply automating steps in a process, it enables intelligent decision-making, coordination, and outcome-driven execution, making automation more strategic, scalable, and impactful.
