The world of automation is evolving rapidly, and organizations are discovering that successful automation programs require more than just developing and deploying a few bots or automating a handful of processes. To truly excel in the era of AI-powered agentic automation, you need a comprehensive, strategic approach that can guide your program from your very first automation to enterprise-wide adoption and transformation.

That's where the Pathfinder Framework comes in. Developed by Automation Anywhere and drawing on years of real-world success stories, Pathfinder provides a structured, systematic roadmap for building and scaling intelligent automation programs. Whether you're just starting your automation journey, working to address a scaling challenge, or ready to embrace agentic process automation, Pathfinder offers the guidance you need to succeed.

Automation Anywhere’s Pathfinder Framework - automation excellence across 9 key dimensions of program success

At its core, the Pathfinder Framework consists of nine interconnected dimensions, each addressing a crucial aspect of automation program success:

1. Strategy & Vision: Setting the north star for your automation journey, ensuring every initiative aligns with and propels your business objectives

2. Governance & Risk Management: Establishing guardrails that enable innovation while ensuring security and compliance

3. Operating Model & Delivery: Creating an effective delivery and engine operating model that transforms automation opportunities into business value

4. People & Skills: Building an ecosystem of talent that combines technical expertise, business acumen, and change leadership capabilities

5. Opportunity Identification & Pipeline Management: Implementing systematic approaches to discover, evaluate, prioritize and execute on high-value initiatives

6. Development & Deployment: Establishing robust practices and standards that ensure reliable, reusable, and maintainable solutions that deliver consistent value

7. Change Management & Adoption: Developing strategies to navigate the cultural shift of AI and automation and drive organization-wide adoption

8. Value Measurement & Analytics: Leveraging frameworks like the Automation Impact Measurement (AIM framework) to quantify and communicate the multi-faceted value of your initiatives

9. Evangelism & Stakeholder Management: Cultivating automation advocates and securing executive buy-in to propel your program forward

These nine dimensions are thoughtfully organized into three program delivery focus areas (Foundation & Framework, Execution & Excellence, and Impact & Influence) and three operational focus areas (Strategic Leadership, Operational Governance, and Tactical Execution). This structure ensures that your program remains strategically aligned, well-governed, and effectively executed at every stage of maturity.

But Pathfinder is more than just a collection of best practices – it's a dynamic framework that grows with your program. For organizations just starting out, it provides clear guidance on establishing strong foundations. As programs mature, it offers insights for scaling capabilities and handling increased complexity. And for those ready to embrace agentic automation, it provides the sophisticated frameworks needed to drive true business transformation.

Think of Pathfinder as your automation program GPS, helping you navigate the complex journey of building an AI-powered automation program. By understanding and leveraging the nine key dimensions, you can create a program that doesn't just deliver isolated solutions, but drives meaningful, sustained business value.

In upcoming posts, we'll dive deeper into each of the nine dimensions, exploring their unique challenges, best practices, and how they interact to create a holistic approach to automation success. Whether you're an automation leader, practitioner, or business stakeholder, the Pathfinder Framework offers valuable insights to help guide your automation journey.

Stay tuned as we navigate the path to agentic automation excellence together.

How does this framework fit in with the Mission control assessment?  I really like the Mission Control report, it forces one to be honest with how mature our RPA program is operating and also gives concrete information about how to move the program forward.

Hey @jackson, that’s a great question and one I'm super excited to answer!

We view the dimension framework as the foundation of all Pathfinder material going forward.  The current Pathfinder mission structure doesn’t do a great job of exposing you all to automation program fundamentals but rather delivers them to you in a targeted way depending on the goal of your action.  This results in a lot of the language and guidance being repetitive and singular across missions.

We want it so that the dimensions teach you all the foundational things required to run a successful program, and then any missions, workshops, or assets we create to be aligned to the dimensions in a direct way so that people can deliberately learn and level up their program.

With this rebuild, it unfortunately means the current assessment is not 100% aligned with the dimensions.  We will be creating a new assessment with more objective questions and better, more actionable, recommendations in the coming months.  Stay tuned!
