Unable to install bot agent

My device will not download the bot agent for the control room as it says it is not a microsoft-verified application, does anyone know a way around this?

@Aaron.Gleason Thank you for the detailed guidance.

I have tried all the suggested steps:

  • Performed system integrity validation using SFC and DISM – no corruption detected
  • Restarted the system and confirmed no background processes like setup.exe, msiexec.exe, or IDriver.exe are running
  • Re-downloaded the installer and attempted installation again
  • Disabled antivirus and firewall temporarily during installation
  • Cleared the %TEMP% folder as much as possible
  • Checked Reliability Monitor; no specific errors related to the Bot Agent installation were observed

Despite trying all the above, the installer was not launching or responding.
Additionally, I am able to install other applications successfully.

As a final step, I performed a full system reset (reinstalled Windows), after which I am now able to install the Bot Agent successfully.

Try this:

https://www.solveyourtech.com/how-to-install-non-microsoft-verified-apps-in-windows-11-a-step-by-step-guide/

If you are using Windows 11 in “S” mode, it may not work at all.

I am able to download the Bot Agent, but I am unable to install it. I tried running it as an administrator and also from the command prompt.

I cleared the temp files and removed the Automation Anywhere folder from the file manager.

When I click on install, nothing happens. I am able to install other applications without any issues.

I also connected with the Microsoft support team, and they confirmed that the issue is with the Automation Anywhere Bot.

@SAI 8174 hmmm. I would love to see Microsoft's report. Our Bot Agent is installed and running on many thousands of computers... but it's our software at fault. 😅

As posted on this message board repeatedly before, you need to find out what is interfering with the software install. Common applications that interfere with installation of software include anti-virus and firewall software, along with some MDM and backup software.

Work with your IT department to selectively disable those types of software from your system until you find the specific piece of software that is interfering with the installation.

Look through the Event Viewer and it might tell you immediately.

Thank you for the response.

This is not a basic “something is blocking the installation” issue. I have already performed extensive troubleshooting, including advanced steps:

  • Ran the installer as Administrator and from Command Prompt (Admin) → nothing happens at all (no window, no progress, no error message).
  • Full deep cleanup: Deleted all Automation Anywhere folders (Program Files, AppData\Local, AppData\Roaming, systemprofile\AppData\Local, ProgramData, etc.), cleared %temp%, ran sc delete, and cleaned relevant registry entries (after taking a backup).
  • Completely disabled Antivirus, Firewall, and Windows Defender during installation attempts.
  • Verified that Windows Installer and other required services are running.
  • Re-downloaded the fresh installer multiple times from different browsers.

This same machine was working perfectly with the Bot Agent until 2 days ago. The problem started immediately after I clicked the “Update Device” popup in the Control Room — the device got disconnected, and since then I have been unable to reinstall the Bot Agent.

I also contacted Microsoft Support via Quick Assist. They thoroughly checked my system and confirmed there are no OS-level blocks or general installer problems on Windows.

Other applications install and run without any issues on this PC. The Bot Agent installer simply refuses to launch, generating zero logs or errors.

Given the timing (right after the Control Room “Update Device” action) and the complete lack of response from the EXE, this strongly appears to be a specific issue or regression with the Bot Agent installer rather than generic system interference.

Can you please check for any known issues or recent changes in the installer after the “Update Device” flow?

@SAI 8174 Simply, the installer hasn’t changed for quite some time. What does the Event Viewer show? When applications crash, it will appear there.

@Aaron.Gleason I checked Event Viewer (Application, System, Setup), but there are no logs or errors generated when I try to launch the Bot Agent installer.

The installer does not seem to execute at all.

At this point I’m unable to identify what is blocking it. Please let me know if there are any specific cleanup tools or additional logs I should check before considering a system reset.

@SAI 8174 Sorry you’re still experiencing issues. Let’s think about things that could affect the installer:

  1. Some corruption of the libraries on the Windows computer. You can refer here to verify your computer does not have any corruption within the operating system itself: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system-files-79aa86cb-ca52-166a-92a3-966e85d4094e
  2. A failed installation running in the background. Try restarting and trying again. Check to see that there are no applications like “setup.exe”, “msiexec.exe”, “IDriver.exe” running.
  3. A failed installation from another application. Since we use an industry-standard installer (InstallShield), a failed installation from another application that also uses InstallShield could be causing some issues.
  4. Try downloading the installer again, just in case.
  5. Disable anti-virus, backup, firewall, etc. software. I know I mentioned this before, but it has affected things in the past.
  6. Check your %TEMP% folder that is exists, is as empty as it can be (a few files that cannot be deleted is typical).
  7. Check the “Reliability Monitor”. (Click Start, search for Reliability Monitor.) See if anything looks unusual. (I need to open an IT ticket to see why the VPN installation keeps failing!)
  8. Finally, I would see if another computer on your corporate network has the same issue as yours.

Let us know!

@SAI 8174 I’m so sorry you had to go through all of that! A fresh re-installation of Windows should be nice and fast, though.
