Why Old Integration Patterns Fail at Agentic Scale

AI agents are getting real jobs.

Not officially, not with HR onboarding, but functionally: they accept goals, break them into tasks, and execute actions across software systems. That’s the agentic promise. Less “tell me how,” more “tell me what.”

The problem many organizations are facing is that they haven’t figured out how to integrate those agents across their enterprise with existing software that keeps their business operational.

Most integration patterns in use today were designed for a world where LLMs did not exist. They assume a human developer is in the loop: reading documentation, understanding APIs, wiring endpoints together, and hard-coding flows. That model works when humans are the primary decision-makers. It breaks down when the decision-maker is a model.

The AI agent is effectively the real developer now. Many of these old protocols we rely on today were purpose-built for humans, but not for AI agents.

This explains why something as dry-sounding as agent interoperability protocols suddenly matters. Because the minute agents stop chatting and start acting, enterprises run headfirst into an old enemy wearing a new disguise: integration sprawl.

 

The n×n problem, now with probabilistic software

Here’s how most agent projects hit a wall:

You want an AI agent to do useful work. Useful work lives behind real enterprise systems: CRM, HR, ITSM, finance, internal apps, automations, APIs. Each of those systems exposes tools in its own way, with its own authentication, schemas, and quirks.

The first agent works. The second needs custom wiring. The tenth turns into a brittle mess of prompt hacks and glue code.

Every new agent multiplies the number of integrations you have to maintain. Add more tools, add more agents, and suddenly you’re rebuilding middleware instead of building intelligence. This is often where early agent momentum slows, not because the models aren’t capable enough, but because traditional integration patterns weren’t designed to scale this way.

 

Enter MCP: the USB-C moment for tool access

Model Context Protocol, or MCP, emerged in late 2024, to solve a very specific problem:

How does an AI agent discover what tools exist, understand how to use them, and call them reliably?

Instead of hard-coding integrations, MCP introduces a standardized way for a client (an AI assistant or agent runtime) to connect to a server and ask a simple question: What can you do?

The server responds with a structured description of its capabilities: the resources available, what they’re for, what inputs they expect, and what outputs they return. Crucially, this information is formatted for model consumption, not human documentation.

The USB-C analogy is a common one for describing MCP. USB-C eliminated the chaos of incompatible connectors. You plug in, negotiate capabilities, and move on. MCP aims to do the same for agents and tools.

 

Process Reasoning Engine (PRE) powered MCP support

If MCP were just a cleaner way to call APIs, it wouldn’t be that interesting. Enterprises already have APIs. Thousands of them. The real shift is that MCP assumes the caller is a model.

Models don’t skim documentation. They reason over context. Without context, agents just see a list of functions. They don’t know when to call which one, or how to chain them toward a goal.

API documentation covers 'how' to use the API. It rarely includes the why. MCP servers build that integration and provide the necessary business context that allows agents to solve any problem at run time.

MCP adds machine-discoverable intent. Instead of pre-wiring every endpoint, MCP allows an agent to discover capabilities at runtime, select the right tool based on a goal, map inputs, execute, and pass outputs downstream.

APIs remain the execution layer. MCP becomes the discovery and reasoning layer that make those APIs usable by agents.

 

Turning existing automations into agent tools

This is where MCP meets enterprise reality.

Most Automation Anywhere customers already have extensive libraries of automations, processes, and API tasks. MCP prevents these customers from needing to rebuild them as “agent-native.” It drives immediate value by exposing APIs to agents to use as tools.

With Automation Anywhere’s MCP server, third-party assistants like Microsoft Copilot or ChatGPT can securely invoke automations. A user asks a question. The assistant discovers available tools via MCP. The model decides which automation to run.

Here's a great example: pulling high-potential Salesforce opportunities, then generating tailored communications based on prior interactions. Existing automations become callable capabilities rather than locked workflows. The catch is metadata. Agents are only as good as the descriptions they see, and most automation libraries are not well-documented.
 

Reusability is the real scaling lever

MCP reshapes the architecture of agentic systems more than the underlying technology.

Instead of building deterministic workflows that anticipate every path, you expose reusable skills. Agents compose those skills dynamically, based on context and need.

One automation can serve multiple agents. One tool can be reused across unrelated workflows. Capabilities become modular, composable, and on-demand.

That’s how software engineering scaled. It’s also what most enterprise automation programs never quite achieve. MCP makes that approach achievable.
 

Security: the unglamorous part that decides everything

As MCP adoption grows, so does the ecosystem. Public MCP indexers already list over 18,000 MCP servers. That velocity is exciting, and it introduces real risk.

Tool calling is data access. Poorly secured MCP servers create supply-chain vulnerabilities.

That’s why security cannot be an afterthought. Agentic systems inherit all the risks of LLM applications: prompt injection, insecure output handling, data poisoning, and compromised dependencies. These map closely to the kinds of issues highlighted in frameworks like the OWASP Top 10 for LLM applications.

Automation Anywhere emphasizes a security-first approach: authentication and authorization, isolation and containerization, audit logs, and governance controls like personally identifiable information (PII) detection and masking. In an agentic world, observability is not optional.

USB-C worked because it met standards, was certified, and included safety constraints. MCP will only work in enterprises if the same discipline follows.
 

Where MCP is headed

MCP has already evolved quickly. In December, the protocol was donated to the Linux Foundation, reinforcing its neutrality and accelerating ecosystem adoption.

While MCP started as a way for agents to access tools and resources, it is expanding to support more complex scenarios: session management, state handling, and better elicitation for long-running processes. These capabilities matter when agents are executing workflows that span minutes or hours and require clarification midstream.

Support across AI assistants is still uneven. Some platforms support the full breadth of MCP capabilities, while others focus primarily on tool calling. That gap is narrowing, and broader interoperability is coming.

 

The takeaway

Old integration patterns fail at agentic scale because they were never designed for software that decides what to do next.

MCP doesn’t make agents smarter. It connects them. That connection turns a clever model into something that can actually do work across the enterprise, without every project turning into a bespoke integration exercise.
