How to decide what actually deserves your attention in enterprise AI

The pace of AI announcements has become its own kind of challenge to the development teams.

Every week, a new technique claims to change how agents reason, a new protocol promises to solve interoperability, and a new model leapfrogs the previous benchmark. For developers and product teams trying to build reliable systems inside enterprise organizations, the volume of change alone is exhausting. And the pressure to stay current can tug teams away from their core focus of shipping innovation.

I’m constantly thinking about how to build a framework for deciding what deserves attention and what can safely wait for maturity.

At Automation Anywhere, we're building for enterprise-grade, mission-critical processes, which means there is a real, significant cost of chasing the wrong idea at the wrong time. What follows is the understanding I return to and how I've seen it play out across product, engineering, and design teams.

Start with first principles, not fear of missing out

For most innovators, the default response to a fast-moving landscape is to move fast with it. Try everything early, stay ahead of the curve, and figure out what's useful later. That approach works reasonably well for personal productivity tools where the cost of a wrong bet is low. For enterprise teams building systems that touch financial operations, regulatory workflows, or customer-facing processes, the cost of chasing every new idea is much higher.

My starting point is a simple distinction between exploration and commitment. There is value in creating space for experimentation, particularly for teams that want to stay close to what's emerging. Experimentation should have defined scope and a specific outcome it's trying to test, because the moment a team starts investing in something before understanding whether it creates real value, the risk of building on an unstable foundation grows quickly.

This is especially true in enterprise organizations, where new tools must integrate with existing systems, comply with governance requirements, and perform consistently at scale. The threshold for adoption is legitimately higher than it is for a solo developer trying out a new IDE plugin, and treating those two contexts as equivalent is where a lot of teams get into trouble.


Let things mature before you commit

Working in the tech industry where the market typically rewards early movers the greatest, my preference for letting new ideas mature before investing in them may feel counterintuitive. Deliberately waiting can feel like falling behind, but the reality is more nuanced than that.

Most genuinely useful technologies go through a predictable cycle. They emerge with significant noise, early adopters test them, and eventually settle into a more accurate understanding of what they actually do well and where they fall short.

Teams that wait for that settling point benefit from better documentation, more stable implementations, and a clearer picture of real-world performance, without having to rebuild their approach every time the early consensus shifts.
This requires paying attention to the journey along the maturity curve before deciding how much to invest. A technology that's still primarily a slide deck concept deserves different treatment than one that's already running in production deployments at scale.

For teams trying to calibrate this in practice, a useful proxy is whether the conversation around something has moved from "what could this do" to "here's what we learned from running it." This is a reliable signal that something has crossed from hype into substance.

Use POCs as decision tools, not demos

When something does clear the maturity threshold, the next step is to test it against a specific outcome before making any broader commitment. This sounds obvious, but there's an important distinction between a proof of concept (POC) designed to demonstrate that a technology works and one designed to answer a real product or operational question.

Demos show the capability but decision-oriented POCs generate evidence. The difference matters because enterprise AI adoption decisions rarely on whether it reliably improves a specific outcome within the constraints of an existing system. This only shows up clearly when you're testing against something real.

Defining success criterion before the POC begins is part of what makes this work. When you’ve clearly defined the outcome you're testing for before starting, results translate directly into an adoption decision. When you haven't clearly defined outcomes beforehand, you end up with something that worked in a controlled environment but leaves the team without a clear path forward.

Pay attention to what spreads organically

Formal evaluation processes are necessary, but they don't catch everything. Some of the most valuable signals about what's worth adopting come from informal adoption patterns already happening inside your team.

In many cases at Automation Anywhere, teams adopt tools not because I decided to evaluate them but because a developer or product manager or designer from my team started using something, found it useful, and shared it with teammates. By the time it reaches a formal discussion with the leadership, there's already organic evidence of value across multiple people and use cases.

That bottom-up pattern matters for two reasons. The tool has already passed an informal test in a real working environment, which is harder to replicate in a controlled demo. And there are already internal advocates who can speak to specific outcomes rather than general promise, which changes the nature of the adoption conversation entirely.

Building organizational awareness of these organic patterns is worth doing deliberately. A developer sharing a tool in a team channel is easy to miss if nobody is paying attention. Making those signals visible, without over-formalizing the process, is how enterprise teams stay genuinely close to what's emerging without chasing everything at once.

Apply the same framework to your own adoption decisions

What I've found is that this approach for technology adoption can work for any size organization. The underlying logic works at any scale because it's about decision discipline rather than process overhead.

The core questions are simple:

  • Where does this sit in its maturity curve?
  • Is there enough real-world evidence to evaluate it honestly?
  • What specific outcome would we test for in a POC, and how would we know if it worked?
  • Is there already organic interest inside the team that suggests it's worth a closer look?

Running any new tool or technologies through those four questions takes minutes and provides a much cleaner basis for adoption decisions than evaluating every announcement that comes through. It also makes it easier to communicate those decisions to stakeholders who want to understand why the team is or isn't moving on something, which is a significant practical benefit when every new model release generates internal questions.

The goal is to make sure that when the team does move, it's moving toward something that will hold up under real enterprise conditions rather than something that looked compelling in a demo or a slide deck.
